But this post is about doctrine precision.
I realized I have been using words like "recursive," "finite," and "infinite" in a practical, non-technical way. That is intentional. The point is not formal correctness in mathematics. The point is operational clarity under cognitive constraints.
What Changed
I used to frame parts of B1C3 as a set of questions.
Now I think that is secondary.
The primary thing is focus.
B1C3 is a way to allocate attention. The diagnostic questions fall out of that allocation.
Attention Is the Scarce Resource
In complex systems, the bottleneck is usually not raw data. It is bounded attention.
There is always more noise than any team can process. So the doctrinal move is not "inspect everything equally." The move is to locate the smallest inspectable point where intervention changes the trajectory.
That is why this matters:

"O" is the bounded point of action.
Proxy Drift and the Loop
A proxy is a compression of reality.
Reality -> Proxy
Compression is necessary. You cannot operate without it.
The risk is drift in the representation loop:
Reality -> Proxy -> Optimization against proxy -> Behavior changes -> Reality changes -> Proxy updates -> Re-optimization
The recursion is not "inside reality." It is inside the relationship between representation and reality.
That is the loop B1C3 tries to inspect.
Compression Over Memorization
The practical move is not to memorize every branch.
The move is to learn the invariant that generates many branches.
This is how experts operate in many fields:
- chess experts recognize positions, they do not store all positions,
- mathematicians learn transformations, not every proof instance,
- navigators learn currents, not every wave.
Doctrinally, this is where B1C3 has become stronger:
from describing isolated failures, to identifying low-dimensional generators of failure.
Mission drift plus recurring drift mechanisms is a compression.
Local Vocabulary (B1C3 Usage)
I am using some words in a local operational sense.
- Recursive: a pattern that keeps generating cognitive work unless perspective changes.
- Finite: bounded enough to inspect, decide, and act on.
- Drift: progressive misalignment, not moral failure.
- Proxy: a useful stand-in for something too complex to directly track.
This is not a rejection of technical definitions. It is a declared local dictionary for doctrine work.
Why This Matters for B1C3
If this framing is right, then B1C3 is not just a diagnostic toolkit.
It is a focus doctrine:
- Mission drift indicates attention drift from purpose.
- Proxy drift indicates attention redirected to representation.
- Knowledge drift indicates attention failing to travel from evidence to decisions.
- Ownership drift indicates attention detached from accountable action.
- Coordination drift indicates attention fragmented across actors.
- Narrative drift indicates attention detached from evidence.
This is one coherent statement:
Attention is scarce. Reality decides where it should go.
